SHANTI MARKSTROM - fashion design
I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a family of very unglamorous hippies. I did not demonstrate my early skills as a designer by making gowns for my Barbie dolls, because I was not allowed to have them (too sexist). I went to an arts school and learned to draw, paint, sing, dance and act. If I knew what a fashion designer was, I certainly had no intention of becoming one. I thought I'd become a dancer or a psychiatrist.

As a University student I studied languages, theater and dance, and worked in the theater's costume shop, learning to make costumes for the stage. My bachelor's degree is in French and I spent a year in France after graduation, teaching English. After several years pursuing interests as diverse as ballet and business, I returned to school at the Academy of Art University to study fashion design.

Fashion design brings together my practical, business side and my artistic interests. I hope to start my own business after gaining some experience in the industry. I am focused on women's wear, with an emphasis on high-end designer ready-to-wear. I design with an emphasis on fine materials, excellent fit, and luxurious details. To me, true luxury is about taking extra time, attention and cost, to create something that feels beautiful to the wearer, but doesn't necessarily scream how much you spent on it. I love to use interesting lining fabrics and inside details that only the wearer would notice. As a former dancer, I know how important it is to have well-fitting garments if you want to move with grace and beauty. I don't see that this should be the exclusive domain of the ballerina in her custom tutu. Any woman will look more beautiful and elegant if the proper attention is paid to fit and proportion.

I am not interested only in dressing rich women. I want to make the luxury pieces that shop girls and students splurge on to wear forever as much as I want to dress for galas and red carpets. My ideal customer is adventurous and yet practical, sensual without being self-indulgent. She loves to tell a story with her clothes, but doesn't want drama to upstage the main attraction: herself.
